Singapore Government Plays Matchmaker with New Dating Platform for Singles

Share:

Singapore has launched a government-developed dating platform to help single public officers find compatible partners, offering an alternative to conventional dating apps that rely on swiping through profiles.

Called FirstDate, the platform was developed by the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) and introduced as a pilot programme on 29 September 2026. It aims to encourage meaningful connections by prioritising shared values and personal preferences rather than offering users an endless stream of potential matches.

Initially, the pilot was open to unmarried public officers aged 21 to 35. The age limit was subsequently extended to 45, with applications for the latest round open from 20 to 26 October 2026.

How Does Singapore’s FirstDate Platform Work?

Unlike conventional dating apps, FirstDate offers users one recommended match per matching cycle, which takes place approximately once a month. However, receiving a match is not guaranteed in every cycle.

Participants must log in using Singpass, Singapore’s national digital identity system, to verify their eligibility. They then complete a questionnaire covering their interests, lifestyle, habits, values and relationship preferences, including age preferences and potential deal-breakers.

The platform uses the Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage algorithm, a mathematical method designed to create stable pairings based on participants’ preferences. The algorithm is associated with the work recognised by the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, awarded to Lloyd Shapley and Alvin Roth for their contributions to the theory of stable allocations and market design.

When a match is made, both participants receive a notification and have three days to decide whether they want to connect. They can view information about their suggested match, including a compatibility score, but photographs are not provided. Contact details are shared only if both parties accept the match.

FirstDate also offers suggested activities called Date Quests to help matched participants break the ice. During promotional periods, eligible participants may receive vouchers for completing certain activities.

A Different Approach to Online Dating

According to GovTech, FirstDate was developed to explore whether offering fewer matches and placing greater emphasis on compatibility could encourage people to give each introduction more consideration.
The idea originated at GovTech’s annual hackathon, where officers explored challenges people face when meeting potential partners.

The platform also incorporates privacy measures. Users’ profiles are visible only to their assigned matches, and participants can deactivate their accounts and request the removal of their information.

The pilot comes as Singapore faces declining marriage numbers and a record-low total fertility rate. The country recorded a fertility rate of 0.87 children per woman in 2025, down from 0.97 in 2024.

However, FirstDate’s long-term impact remains uncertain. GovTech has said that no decision has been made on whether the platform will be expanded beyond the pilot programme.

While the service offers another way for singles to meet potential partners, compatibility scores alone cannot guarantee personal chemistry or a lasting relationship.
